A. William Markell ’54

A. William Markell ’54 died on December 7, 2014, in Needham, Massachusetts.

He was born on June 6, 1933, in Boston, and graduated with honors from Brookline (Mass.) High School. He was a member of the Alpha Rho Epsilon fraternity and was active in the Sailing Club and Political Forum. He earned an M.B.A. from Columbia University in 1956 and began his business career at RCA as a financial analyst. Among his numerous entrepreneurial enterprises, he ran an automobile transportation company; became vice president and director of marketing at Linguistic Systems, Inc., a translation firm; and assumed the presidency of Cambridge Institute in Boston, a notable computer programming school. He was a volunteer member of Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) in Portland. He established the Markell/Balkin Family Scholarship Fund at Bowdoin, and the A. William Markell and Carol Smith Markell Gallery at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art. He is survived by his wife, Carol Markell; daughter Jennifer Rosenberg; son Adam Markell; one granddaughter; and his sister Lorraine Balkin. A public reception will be held at Bowdoin on January 12 , 2015, at 3:00 pm in Main Lounge, Moulton Union.
