Basil H. Newton ’64

Basil H. Newton ’64 died November 30, 2014, in Bangor. He was born on April 14, 1942, in Brunswick, and graduated from Brunswick High School. He attended Bowdoin from 1960 to 1962, a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. His career in the grocery business spanned nearly 60 years, starting at the age of 10 working at Livernois IGA. He later co-owned the store before becoming the store manager at Midtown IGA in Lisbon Falls in 1973. In 1979, he moved to Bangor and became a retail grocery consultant for Milliken-Tomlinson Co., which later became Wetterau Inc. and eventually SuperValu Inc. His retired from Associated Grocers of Maine. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Vivian A. Cote Newton; sons Bill and James Newton; brother Ralph Newton; and sister Joanne Melville. He was predeceased in 1978 by his first wife, Joyce Dunn Newton, whom he married on January 29, 1966.
