Bruce G. MacDermid ’69 died March 28, 2014, in Guilford, Connecticut.

He was born on May 12, 1947, in Hartford, Conn., and graduated from the Loomis School. A dean’s list student, he was president of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and founder of the fraternity’s underprivileged children’s project. He received his commission from the Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I., before serving aboard the U.S.S. Opportune as a lieutenant junior grade. He went on to graduate from Boston University School of Law in 1975. He began his law career at Hoppin, Carey & Powell, where he was a partner, and later at Shipman & Goodwin. In 1992 he opened his own practice in Hartford, known today as MacDermid, Reynolds & Glissman, PC. Under his stewardship, his firm initiated an annual service project, which focused on serving the Asylum Hill community, delivering food and gifts to families in need. He was a literacy volunteer, a regular blood donor for the Red Cross, and an avid fundraiser and supporter of his alma maters. A natural athlete, he was competitive on tennis, paddle, and squash courts, and he could swing both righty and lefty at bat. He ran seven marathons, including the Boston, in less than three hours. He is survived by Betsy Mallory MacDermid, his wife of forty-four years; sons Trevor R. MacDermid ’98 and Chad M. MacDermid ’00; and one grandson. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert G. MacDermid III, M.D. ’70.
