Donald E. Richter ’56

The Reverend Donald E. Richter ’56 died on September 28, 2014, in Jamestown, Rhode Island.

He was born in Lancaster, Mass., on January 28, 1935, and graduated from Lancaster High School. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity, and went on to earn his bachelor of divinity at Andover Newton Theological School in 1961. He was ordained that year at United Church in Chelsea, Vt. He also participated in Ecumenical Studies at St. George’s House at Windsor Castle in the United Kingdom, and served UCC churches in Chelsea, Vt.; Seekonk, Mass.; London, England; and Westminster, Mass. He was instrumental in establishing housing for the elderly in Seekonk and Westminster, Mass., and worked with a number of congregations to refinance and rebuild their churches. As president and representative of the UCC, he was chosen in 1975 to participate in an exchange program through the UCC and Evangelische Kirche in East Germany. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth Oulten Anne Richter; daughters Martha and Laura; son David; two grandchildren; and brother Henry Richter. He was predeceased by brother Benjamin Richter.
