Donald N. Lukens ’46

Donald N. Lukens ’46 died May 3, 2014, in Scarborough. He was born in Wyoming, Ohio, on August 11, 1923, and prepared for college at Belmont (Mass.) High School and Hebron Academy. He was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity. While a student at Bowdoin, he participated in the Navy V12 officer training program at Bates and then joined the Navy. He served as executive officer on PT-586 and PT-584 and, when World War II ended, he served as a watch officer of the USS Constitution. He served to lieutenant junior grade. He went on to earn a master’s degree from the Harvard Business School in 1949. He started his career as a salesman for his father’s Massachusetts company, Lukens Laboratories, and later established his own business: Lukens Chemical Co., later called D.N. Lukens Chemical Company. He co-founded Chemicals and Pigments Corp. in 1953, which merged with D.N. Lukens in 1973. He retired in 1989 but remained chairman. He was a long-time member of the Masons at Norumbega Lodge in Belmont, and he was actively involved in Bowdoin and Harvard Business School alumni associations. He is survived by a former wife, Elizabeth E. Noonan Lukens; son Dana Lukens; daughters Helen Lukens Mozzoni and Liza Rutherford; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and brother John P. Lukens. Other survivors include Laureen Prophett, Robert and Judy Wilkinson, Cheryl and Eric Ludwig, and George Cummings. He was predeceased by a former wife, Barbara F. Atwood Murphy, and a brother, Alan R Lukens IV.
