George T. Little ’40

George T. Little ’40 died on December 18, 2014, in Shelburne, Vermont. 

He was born July 28, 1918, in Portland, Maine, to G. Tappen Little and Virginia Cole Little. Little prepared for college at Deering High School in Portland. Following his graduation from Bowdoin, Little earned master’s degrees from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and Columbia University and a doctorate in international relations from Yale University. During World War II, he was employed at the Board of Economic Warfare and in Civilian Public Service. Following the war, he served as administrator of Quaker Relief in Austria and Eastern Europe. He taught political science and international law at Yale, Swarthmore, the University of Connecticut, and at the University of Vermont for over thirty years, retiring as Professor Emeritus of Political Science. Little was instrumental in establishing the Vermont Council on World Affairs, serving in many roles for over fifty years. He was also a co-founder of the American Civil Liberties Union of Vermont. He married Virginal Lyle Cole on May 24, 1942; she predeceased him in 1984. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Born Sproston, whom he married on May 6, 1989. He is also survived by his children George Jr., David (Cindy), and Katie; and grandchildren Tappan, Eric, Matthew, and Heather.
