Joseph J. Schmuch ’49

Joseph J. Schmuch ’49 died October 1, 2014, in Wenham, Mass. He was born in Lynn, Mass., on March 9, 1928, and prepared for college at Lynn Classical High School. He graduated cum laude in 1948, a member of Alpha Rho Upsilon fraternity. He went on earn a master of arts degree from Brown University in 1952, study philosophy at Harvard University from 1955 to 1957, and earn a master of science degree from Simmons College in 1959. He served to sergeant in the Army. He began his career as a Latin and German teacher at Wilbraham Academy, then as a library assistant in Stoneham, Mass., and as a librarian in Reading and Belmont, Mass. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Enid L. Kaler Schmuch; daughters Gretchen A. and Valerie J. Schmuch; son Karl J. Schmuch; six grandchildren; sister Dolores Sanford; and brother Edward Schmuch. He was predeceased by his brother, Richard Schmuch.
