Michael R. McAvoy ’70

Michael R. McAvoy ’70 died March 28, 2014, in Wellesley Hills, Mass. He was born on June 19, 1948, in Brunswick, son of Robert E. McAvoy ’50, and graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka, Ill. He attended Bowdoin from 1966 to 1969, a member of Chi Psi fraternity. A defensive guard on the varsity football team, he was named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division II Weekly All-East Football Team for his performance in a 1967 game against Bates. As a photographer for the Wellesley Townsman newspaper, he won a New England Press Association award for spot news photography for the front-page photos he took of a near drowning during a local biathlon. He was a member of Wellesley Jaycees, Nehoiden Golf Club, and Boston Amateur Golf Society. He served on the Wellesley Centennial Celebration Committee and produced the 100th Anniversary Video for the town. He is survived by his father, Robert E. McAvoy ’50; sisters Deborah Wirth, Betsy M. Manning, and Susan M. Hugenberger; and brother Shawn D. McAvoy. He was predeceased by his mother, Patricia Gerow McAvoy.
