Dr. Albert L. Babcock ’48

Dr. Albert L. Babcock ’48 died April 23, 2014, at his home in Duxbury, Mass. He was born in Bangor on June 13, 1926, and prepared for college at Bangor High School and Phillips Exeter Academy. He served to private first class in the Army Air Forces during World War II and graduated in 1949, remaining a member of the class of 1948. A member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity, he went on to graduate from Jefferson Medical College in 1952. He did his residency in plastic surgery at the Latter Day Saints Hospital and Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City and in general surgery at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut. He was board certified in surgery in 1959. He served as an assistant clinical professor of surgery at the University of Connecticut. He worked in the greater Hartford area as a plastic surgeon for forty-five years, from 1963 until his retirement in 2008. He volunteered as a surgeon overseas, starting in 1975 on the hospital ship S.S. Hope in Tunisia, followed by many volunteer trips to Brazil through the Esperança Project on the Amazon River, in Recife, and Santarém. He was the recipient of a Common Good Award from Bowdoin in 1993. He is survived by his companion, Antonia Colby Shoham; daughters Linda and Janna Babcock; sons Jonathan, David, and Daniel Babcock; step-daughter Susan Donnelly; six grandchildren; a great-grandson; sister Jane Babcock; and former wives Rhoda Bannon and Patricia Williams. He was predeceased by brother Edward B. Babcock ’44.
